Gary C. Matzner was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1973 and built a career across healthcare law, business, and public service. Pinecrest made him widely known; his family, professional, and congregational life reached well beyond Village Hall.
A life in South Florida
From Stamford to South Florida.
Born in Stamford, Connecticut, on October 2, 1948, Gary came south through college and law school and built his adult life in Miami. He was Veronica’s husband and the father of four sons, present for school, sports, family meals, and the ordinary routines that mattered as much to him as any public office.
Friends and family remember a practical problem-solver who preferred assembling people, numbers, and a workable plan to making a speech. That instinct carried from hospital transactions to municipal government and Temple Judea.
Healthcare law
More than fifty years in healthcare law.
Gary advised hospitals, managed-care companies, physician practices, ambulatory surgery centers, and other healthcare organizations on the regulatory and corporate questions that shape how care is financed and delivered. His work ranged from compliance and contracting to acquisitions, restructurings, and major financings.
His KO Lawyers biography described him as the “Dean of Health Law Attorneys,” a title that reflected both the length of his career and the range of institutions that relied on his judgment. He also co-founded AmeriHealth, a hospital management company, and served in healthcare executive and consulting roles as well as private practice.

Temple Judea
President of Temple Judea, 2018–2020.
Temple Judea of Coral Gables elected Gary president for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2018. The congregation drew on the same financial discipline, nonprofit experience, and consensus-building ability that he had brought to civic government.
His term included the abrupt disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. Temple Judea’s 2019–2020 annual report records a congregation that moved worship, study, education, and member outreach online while maintaining community ties. Gary’s family remembers his larger aim as modernizing the Temple’s internal operations and strengthening it for the years ahead.
By 2021, Temple Judea listed him as immediate past president. The role was another expression of the preparation and continuity he valued: the congregation’s records identify both the president who followed him and Gary’s continued place in its leadership.
